Dermal fillers – The Facts

Dermal fillers have become the ‘go to’ treatment for adding volume to hollow and sunken areas of the face, lifting a sagging jawline and lower face and even plumping wrinkles and fixing crooked noses. But before making the decision to undergo dermal filler injections, it’s worth knowing the facts about not only the results they can achieve but what to look for in a clinic.

At ELZ Aesthetics in Stockton Heath Warrington and Hale in Cheshire, we are proud to offer the expertise and medical knowledge of Dr. Ahmed, a fully-qualified and highly-skilled aesthetic practitioner. We aim to give you all the information and knowledge that you need, prior to deciding on whether to go ahead with this treatment. We believe this keeps all our patients safe and confident when deciding on a non-surgical procedure.

Dermal fillers are substances which are injected in to various areas of the face at different depths to achieve a more youthful appearance. Most temporary dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance within the body, which forms part of the matrix that supports youthful skin. Hyaluronic acid can hold around 1000 times its own weight in water therefore an excellent hydrator and volume restorer, when contained in a special gel-like substance.

At ELZ Aesthetics, we only use FDA approved products that are clinically-proven and have been tested extensively and have reliable safety profiles. Dermal fillers should only be administered by medically-trained professionals, to ensure your safety as well as efficacy of results. It is now common to hear of non-medics to be injecting dermal fillers with no experience, knowledge or back-up, should anything go wrong. This is dangerous not only to your looks but to your health and it’s vital to select a practitioner who understands the protocols to follow in an unforeseen event and to have the medical equipment to hand to solve any issues that may arise. It’s also important to know that far more complications happen with non-medically trained practitioners.

Dermal fillers can treat the following facial concerns –

  • Sunken cheeks and lower face
  • Lifting jowls and jawline
  • Non-surgical rhinoplasty (nose reshaping)
  • Static lines and wrinkles
  • Hollow temples
  • Reshaping the forehead and chin

Dermal Fillers – What to expect

Dermal FillersBefore any treatment can commence, we ask that you attend a no-obligation consultation with Dr. Ahmed so that he can discuss your requirements, research your medical history and determine whether you are suitable for treatment. At this stage, he will be able to advise you on a suitable treatment plan and expected results.

When a suitable course of treatment has been decided, you will be treated with either a topical anaesthetic or indeed some injectable anaesthetic to minimise any discomfort to you. Many of the dermal fillers on the market, now contain an anaesthetic so extra anaesthesia may not always be needed prior to treatment.

The treatment takes between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the area and this involves injecting the dermal filler just beneath the surface of the skin with a fine needle or cannula. Cannulas don’t need as many insertion sites and cause less bruising as they tend to slide past blood vessels and veins. Following the injections, Dr. Ahmed will massage the area to smooth out the product, if required.

There is no medical down time following a treatment with dermal fillers. However, you may experience some bruising, swelling and tenderness in the treated area for a few days afterwards. Dr.  Ahmed will advise on aftercare such as not to do anything that will make you too hot, such as strenuous exercise, saunas or hot baths as this could increase the chances of bruising. Paracetamol is recommended for any tenderness but anti-inflammatories are not recommended as they can also increase the risk of bruising. You will be able to apply light make up, 6 hours, post treatment.

Results vary in their longevity, depending on the area that is treated and your own metabolic response to dermal fillers. If you are a particularly active person, spending lots of time in the gym or if you smoke or spend a lot of time in the sun, this can reduce the time that your results will last. On average, expect dermal fillers to last between 4 and 12 months.
