Is Botox safe? Botox is arguably the world’s most popular and well-known injectable treatment for the temporary reduction of expression lines and dynamic wrinkles.
The substance used for this procedure is actually called Botulinum Toxin Type A, which is a neurotoxin derived from Clostridium Botulinum, a largely inactive and non-toxic organism when found in the natural environment. However, if ingested in the form of Botulinum Toxin which causes Botulism, 1 gram could kill over 1 million people and 2 grams could kill the entire human population on Earth.
It’s no wonder therefore, that people could be worried about the safety of Botox injections.
Botox has been used in medicine for decades to treat excessive sweating, migraines, muscular spasms and bladder issues. It was during the treatment for muscle spasms in the face that it’s anti-ageing qualities were discovered.
Although Clostridium botulinum comes in several strains—eight serotypes A, B, C1, C2, D, E, F, and G; only serotypes A and B are used to create clinical preparations.
Botulinum toxin in a diluted form is injected in to the muscle and suffuses the nerve terminal and binds. This prevents the release of acetylcholine which is a neurotransmitter. Without acetylcholine, muscle activity stops.
This muscle paralysis is what smoothes expression lines and wrinkles and stops muscle spasms. Botox is effective as it ‘paralyzes’ the wrinkles temporarily – for around 120 days. Thousands of anti-wrinkle treatments are now performed worldwide every week.
Although Botulinum Toxin can be life-threatening, tiny does, such as those used in the injectable application of Botox for cosmetic purposes are considered safe. In fact only 36 cases of adverse effects associated with its cosmetic use have been reported between 1989 and 2003 in the US. It was also argued that in some of these cases, the patients were unwell prior to or during the treatment, which meant that it is not 100% proven that it was the Botox injections themselves that caused the side-effects, but prior or current illness in those patients.
Although Botox injections are considered safe, it is important that you select a medically qualified specialist who has had specific training in the administration of this treatment.
